In vocational rehabilitation sessions, we will work together in five steps:
Counselling Approaches: I prefer humanistic (person-centred, gestalt, existential) counselling approaches, but also draw from a blend of elements found within other theoretical approaches including the following: psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, systemic, multicultural, and constructionist. I ground these theories and approaches with a flexible but structured, sequential, and systematic method.
Types of Clients: The clients I work are young adults, middle-aged adults, and elders or seniors (65+) who experience challenges with adapting to the medical, psychosocial, and vocational aspects of disabilities. This includes health conditions, diseases, illnesses, and injuries that limit a person’s cognitive, developmental, neurological, physical, psychosocial, and/or sensory functioning. They experience barriers and limitations to achieving their personal, career, or independent living goals.
Client Issues: My clients have reported a loss of their identities, roles, and purpose, which has had a profound impact. This is a stressful situation and transition to cope with. They report feeling a mix of emotions including frustration, anger, anxiety, depression, sadness, and grief. They seek guidance on their path to recovery, and the tools to empower themselves for improved functioning and a meaningful quality of life, often found through education and employment.
As a potential client, you may be wanting to explore a variety of issues. This could include your vocational goals with entering, staying in, or returning to school or work. You may also be wanting to address your development, personal problems, strengths and vulnerabilities, decision making, inner conflict, feelings and beliefs, needs and goals, relationships, or living a more satisfying and resourceful life.
Client Goals: You may be interested in achieving career, education, employment, independent living, personal, psychosocial, or work-related goals. You may also be focused on growth, improved functioning, learning to cope with stressors, recovery, and more.
Additional Info: As a potential client, your experience, identity, and story matters. I will listen with curiosity and non-judgement; ask questions; and reflect to understand you. I offer empathy, genuineness, and positive regard.
This is an opportunity for a collaborative and meaningful experience. We will explore the issues; support your feelings and needs; and create a plan with goals and actions to take when you are ready.
