Melody’s Approach and Treatment Philosophy

I view counselling as a collaborative and supportive process focused on your healing and growth.  Our sessions will focus on exploring tools that will help you reach your goals, reduce stress, release past painful experiences, and improve your relationships – including the one you have with yourself!  It is my intention to provide you with a safe space and emotional support. I will gently challenge you, encourage you, and celebrate your wins with you along the way. Together, we will examine the patterns that may be holding you back, and work towards creating a more meaningful, connective, and joyous life.

I practice from an anti-oppression, justice-oriented, feminist, transpersonal & relational perspective. I view us as being much bigger than the stories we tell ourselves from an egoic perspective. I believe in a holistic approach to counselling focusing on the wellness of mind, body, and spirit, paying particular attention to each client’s unique situation & needs.

Q WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN MY FREE 15-MINUTE CONSULTATION?

We will meet on Jane to talk about your current struggle, what your goal might be for sessions and how I can be of service. The consult will allow you to get to know me and my approach and before setting up appointments.

Q WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING SUBSEQUENT COUNSELLING SESSIONS?

I believe each individual person is unique and what works for one person, may not work for everyone. Together we will explore what tools and strategies will help you to move through your struggle and reach your goals. We will look at family patterns, removing obstacles, exploring thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I am here to encourage and support clients; a compassionate facilitator. We all want connection - someone to talk to who will really listen and accept us without judgement. My intention is to provide a safe space and to support you on your personal journey toward self awareness and discovery.

Q HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED COUNSELLING?

There are a variety of reasons why someone might seek out counselling. You may be facing a challenge, a crisis, or a life changing event. Maybe you are experiencing feelings of anxiety, low self-esteem, or depression. Events from your past may be interfering with your life in the present. Perhaps you have never felt that anyone has really listened to you or understood you, let alone accepted you. Maybe you are feeling stuck or experiencing a lack of direction. These are just a few of the many examples of why someone might want to attend counselling sessions. Seeking support and receiving help is a courageous step towards a better quality of life. Counselling can help you to accept the things that you cannot change and help you to bring about changes that are possible.

Q WHAT STYLE OF COUNSELLING DO YOU PRACTICE?

I believe in a holistic approach to counselling, drawing on several perspectives based on the needs of my clients.

Family systems work is based on Bowen’s Family Systems Theory. We will work together to discover your patterns of behavior and how it relates to the role you are expected to play. This can reveal new and more effective options for problem solving.

Gestalt therapy follows an approach that will help you to concentrate on the “here and now” and work towards removing obstacles created by past experiences. This allows for the development of awareness and understanding into the nature of thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

Transpersonal Psychology invites you to consider life experiences as valuable, opportunities for growth. By expanding the context of our human experience, and beyond that to our spiritual existence where the intention is connection to each other and to something greater than ourselves.

Q IS ONLINE COUNSELLING AS EFFECTIVE AS IN-PERSON COUNSELLING?

Easy and accessible, online sessions are just as powerful as in-person sessions. When you find a counsellor that works with you - someone who feels safe and nonjudgmental, and provides a space where you can explore your feelings and work towards your goals - it doesn't matter if you are in in person or online. From the convenience and comfort of your home you can have the support you deserve and desire. You can have the opportunity to express and heal.

Q HOW ARE ONLINE SESSIONS DONE?

We will meet on Jane App - a program that enables us to video conference. You can use Jane on whatever platform works for you - on your mobile, computer or tablet. Jane is free to use and there is no need download the program to participate, but you will need a video camera and Internet connection. You can book through my booking link https://empoweredlifecounselling.janeapp.com/

Q HOW MANY SESSIONS COULD I BENEFIT FROM?

The number of sessions will vary for each person. Your purpose for therapy, your goal, your finances and your availability will all impact how we move forward. We can discuss this in your free 15 minute consultation.

Q IS COUNSELLING CONFIDENTIAL?

Yes, absolutely.
There will be times where we may discuss if you are ready to share certain information with people in your life – but only when you feel ready. What we discuss never leaves the room except for these circumstances:
The courts subpoena my files or if I am subpoenaed as a witness in court
Criminal code violations where physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse has not previously been reported (eg. Child abuse, Elder abuse, etc)
Whereby any person’s life or health is in obvious danger, including my own. If you threaten to harm yourself or another, I am required to report this to the appropriate authorities.
In the event of an emergency, I may have to share your identity, medical history and presenting condition to an emergency crew and contact your emergency contact.
It is my intention to provide you with the best possible care and support. That is why throughout our therapeutic relationship there will be occasions where I will consult with a professional peer (another Registered Therapeutic Counsellor) or a RCS (Registered Counselling Supervisor). Your confidence is held within the boundaries and ethics governing my practice and I will not disclose any identifying factors with the exceptions noted above where I am legally required to.
